Warts Q & A

What are warts?

Warts are small growths on your child’s skin caused by an infection below the surface of the skin. Warts are typically hard and flesh-colored or brown. They may be dome-shaped, flat, or fingerlike. Your child may have a single wart, a cluster of warts, or several warts in different areas of their body.

The most common areas for your child to have a wart are the:

  • Feet

  • Face

  • Knees

  • Fingers

It’s common for children to have warts and it’s not a cause for concern. Warts aren’t a serious medical condition, but they are contagious and can pass from one person to another.

Are warts painful?

Warts are not usually painful unless they’re located on the bottom of your child’s feet or between their fingers or toes. In this case, the area around the wart may become irritated and tender.

What are the different types of warts?

There are several types of warts, all caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV infects the skin through a small cut in your skin or by skin-to-skin contact with someone with HPV.

Types of warts include:

  • Common wart: grow anywhere on the body, especially on hands and fingers

  • Plantar wart: grow on the soles of the feet

  • Flat warts: grow in groups, often 20-100, on the forehead, cheeks, arms, and legs.

  • Filiform wart: grow in long thin threads with spiky texture on the face

Genital warts are another type of wart that spreads through sexual contact. Sexually active teens and young adults are at increased risk of having genital warts and should receive medical treatment if they notice skin growths on or near their genitals.

What are the treatments for warts?

Dr. Fayad uses cryotherapy to treat warts. This treatment uses liquid nitrogen to apply extremely cold temperatures to freeze the wart. It may take several visits to get rid of a wart, but the cryotherapy treatment typically takes less than a minute each time.
